Today we celebrate LEGO’s 80th birthday by bringing you the best LEGO inspired tees on the net. The LEGO blocks we all grew up with were conceived in Denmark in 1949 by Ole Kirk Christiansen (who was a carpenter) and were initially known as “Automatic Binding Bricks”. Yes, they really are that old! in the 80 years since LEGO has become an international phenomenon, expanding into movies, board games, video games, clothing, books and even five themed amusement parks – they’re located in Billund, Denmark, Windsor, England, Günzburg, Germany, Carlsbad, California and Winter Haven, Florida. • LEGO does not produce military themed LEGO sets as founder Ole Kirk Christiansen set a policy of not wanting to make war seem like child’s play. Fair enough considering he was born in 1891 and lived through the atrocities of World War one and two!
• Wondering what the biggest LEGO set is? That title was held by a minifig-scaled edition of the Star Wars Millennium Falcon released in 2007 with 5,195 pieces. It was more recently surpassed by a 5,922 piece Taj Mahal.
• Remember LEGO space sets? So do NASA apparently! In 2011, the Space Shuttle Endeavour brought 13 Lego kits to the International Space Station, where astronauts will build models and see how they react in microgravity. LEGO in space, for sciene! Well, it keeps the astronauts occupied at the very least.
• Lego has licensed themes from numerous popular franchises including Avatar: The Last Airbender, Batman, Ben 10, Cars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Minecraft, Pirates of the Caribbean, Prince of Persia, Speed Racer, Spider-Man, SpongeBob SquarePants, Star Wars, Toy Story and World of Warcraft.
